Contest Encourages Young People to Think About
Pursuing a Career in Healthcare

Simi Valley Hospital will be recognizing three outstanding local students for their health-inspired essays at an evening celebration on Tuesday, June 20, at 6 p.m.

Each winning student will be awarded a check for $300, as well as have their essay displayed in the hospital, posted on the SVH website and published in the organization’s community newsletter. Hospital administration, board members and hospital staff will be on hand to celebrate and recognize the winning entries. The general public is also invited to attend this special ceremony.

Three essay questions were developed and directed at various grade levels. The first essay question asked students grade 3-5 to provide a 100 word essay and/or illustration answering the question, “If the patient care tower (SVH’s new building project) had a mascot, what would it look like and why? (Minimum of 100 words or an illustration).” Students grade 6-8 were asked to write a 500 word essay on, “What will be the greatest breakthrough in medical technology or medicine in the next ten years, and how will it make people’s lives better?” while grades 9-12 were asked to write a 1,000 word essay answering the question, “What is the most important health issue facing young people today, and what steps can be taken to resolve it?” —Written by Atherwood Middle School, Simi Valley, CA
